Step-by-Step JoSAA 2026 Roadmap
Registration & Profile Verification
Candidates log into the official JoSAA 2026 portal using their JEE Main 2026 Application Number and Password (or JEE Advanced credentials for IITs). Verify state of eligibility, category, and personal details.
Choice Filling & Priority Strategy
Fill as many institute-branch choices as possible in strict order of preference. Utilize a 3-tier strategy: Dream choices (above current rank), Realistic choices (matching rank range), and Safe backups.
Mock Seat Allotment (Rounds 1 & 2)
JoSAA releases two mock seat allocation lists prior to locking choices. Mock rounds help you analyze likely allotments and adjust your preference sequence before the final deadline.
Official Seat Allocation Rounds
Seats are allocated sequentially over official rounds based on candidate merit rank, category, quota (AI/HS/OS), seat matrix, and locked choice preference list.
Seat Willingness Selection
Upon seat allocation, choose one of three willingness options: Freeze (accept & lock), Float (accept & consider higher choices in all institutes), or Slide (accept & consider higher choices in the same institute).
Online Document Verification & Query Response
Upload required documents (10th/12th marksheets, Category Certificate issued after April 1, 2026, Medical Certificate). System officers verify documents online and may raise queries that MUST be answered within the deadline.
Seat Acceptance Fee (SAF) & PAF Payment
Pay the mandatory Seat Acceptance Fee (₹30,000 for GEN/OBC/EWS; ₹15,000 for SC/ST/PwD) online to confirm the allocated seat. For NIT+ system seats, Partial Admission Fee (PAF) must be paid in the final JoSAA round.
Physical Reporting & CSAB Special Rounds
Report physically to the allotted institute for final document verification and session commencement. Any remaining vacant seats in NITs, IIITs & GFTIs are subsequently filled via CSAB Special Rounds.
Seat Willingness Options: Freeze vs Float vs Slide
When a seat is allocated in any round, you must accept the seat and select one of these three options online.
Freeze
FreezeAccept the allotted seat and exit further counselling rounds.
Choose this when you are completely satisfied with the allotted college and branch. You will not be considered for higher choices in subsequent rounds.
Float
FloatAccept the seat, but opt for upgrade in ANY institute.
If a higher preference choice across any participating institute becomes available in later rounds, your seat automatically upgrades.
Slide
SlideAccept the seat, but opt for upgrade within the SAME institute.
Your seat remains in the same college, but you will automatically move to a higher preferred branch within that same institute if a vacancy opens.
Mandatory Documents Checklist for Verification
Documents must be scanned and uploaded during online reporting. Original documents are verified during physical reporting.
- Class 10th Mark Sheet & Certificate (Date of Birth proof)
- Class 12th Performance / Qualifying Examination Mark Sheet
- JEE Main / JEE Advanced Official Score Card & Admit Card
- Category Certificate (OBC-NCL / GEN-EWS issued ON OR AFTER April 1, 2026)
- SC / ST Certificate (State/Central government authority format)
- Physical Disability Certificate (PwD candidates - min 40% benchmark disability)
- Medical Fitness Certificate (Signed by a registered medical practitioner as per JoSAA format)
- Valid Government Photo Identity Card (Aadhaar Card / Passport / Voter ID)
Seat Acceptance Fee (SAF) Breakdown
*SAF is adjusted against the first-semester institute tuition fee upon physical reporting.
