Comprehensive answers to common questions about JEE Main 2026 cutoffs, JoSAA counselling steps, seat categories, state quota eligibility, document verification, and CSAB special rounds.
Predictor
Predictor & Algorithm
(5 Questions)How accurate is the JEE Main 2026 college predictor?
The predictor uses official JoSAA Round 5 closing rank datasets from the 2026 and 2025 counselling seasons. It applies a ±5% confidence margin to classify your admission chances into 'High Chance' (rank comfortably clears cutoff) and 'Close to Cutoff' (borderline margin). While historical cutoffs are the most reliable indicator available, actual 2026 opening/closing ranks may vary based on student preferences and seat matrix updates.
What is the difference between Opening Rank and Closing Rank?
Opening Rank (OR) is the rank of the first candidate admitted to a specific branch/institute in a given round. Closing Rank (CR) is the rank of the last candidate admitted to that branch. The predictor compares your CRL or category rank against the Closing Rank — if your rank is less than or equal to the Closing Rank, you have a high probability of securing admission.
Should I enter Session 1 or Session 2 rank?
You should enter the final Common Rank List (CRL) rank specified on your official NTA JEE Main 2026 Scorecard. NTA computes your final rank considering the best of your two session percentile scores. Always use your final CRL rank or category rank for accurate prediction.
What does 'High Chance' vs 'Close to Cutoff' mean?
'High Chance' indicates that your rank comfortably clears the historical closing rank of that branch (your rank ≤ closing rank). 'Close to Cutoff' indicates that your rank is within a 5% margin above the historical closing rank, meaning admission is possible depending on minor annual rank fluctuations.
Is my rank, category, or personal data saved or sent to any server?
No. The entire prediction algorithm and JoSAA closing rank dataset run 100% inside your web browser (client-side JavaScript). Zero bytes of data, ranks, or selections are sent to any external server or third party.
JoSAA Process
JoSAA Counselling & Choice Filling
(5 Questions)How many choices should I fill during JoSAA 2026 choice locking?
Fill as many choices as possible (ideally 30 to 50+ options). There is no penalty or fee for filling extra choices. Order your choices strictly by genuine preference, using a 3-tier strategy: Dream choices (above current rank), Realistic choices (matching rank range), and Safe backup options.
What is the difference between Freeze, Float, and Slide?
Freeze: You accept the allotted seat and exit further counselling rounds. Float: You accept the allotted seat but remain open to upgraded seats across ANY institute in subsequent rounds. Slide: You accept the allotted seat but remain open to upgraded branches within the SAME institute.
What happens if I forget to lock my choice list before the deadline?
If you fail to manually lock your choice list before the official deadline, your last saved choice preference list will be automatically locked by the JoSAA system. However, it is strongly recommended to review and lock your list manually.
What is Mock Seat Allotment and why is it important?
JoSAA releases two mock seat allotments based on choices filled by candidates up to specific dates. Mock rounds indicate your tentative allotment based on current choice lists, allowing you to reorder or add choices before final locking.
Can I change or reorder my choices after Round 1 allotment?
No. You cannot edit, add, or reorder your choice list after the final choice locking deadline before Round 1. In subsequent rounds, you can only change your willingness option (Freeze, Float, Slide) or withdraw from counselling.
Categories
Seat Reservation & Categories
(5 Questions)What are the 5 primary seat categories in JoSAA?
1. OPEN (General Merit - 40.5% seat pool open to all), 2. OBC-NCL (Other Backward Classes Non-Creamy Layer - 27.0%), 3. GEN-EWS (Economically Weaker Section - 10.0%), 4. SC (Scheduled Castes - 15.0%), and 5. ST (Scheduled Tribes - 7.5%).
What is the mandatory issue date for OBC-NCL and GEN-EWS certificates for 2026?
For JoSAA 2026, OBC-NCL and GEN-EWS category certificates MUST be issued ON OR AFTER APRIL 1, 2026 in the official central government prescribed format. Certificates issued prior to April 1, 2026 will be rejected during online verification.
How does the Female Supernumerary Quota work?
Female supernumerary seats (at least 20% total representation) are additional seats created over and above the sanctioned intake in IITs and NITs. Female candidates are first considered for Gender-Neutral seats based on merit; if not allotted, they are automatically considered for female-only supernumerary seats.
What happens if my category certificate is rejected during online verification?
If an uploaded category certificate is found invalid or out-of-date, verifying officers raise a query. If unresolved, your seat allotment in the reserved category will be cancelled, and your category will be updated to General (OPEN) for subsequent rounds.
How does horizontal 5% PwD reservation apply?
5% horizontal reservation applies across all categories (OPEN-PwD, OBC-NCL-PwD, EWS-PwD, SC-PwD, ST-PwD) for candidates possessing a valid PwD certificate (minimum 40% benchmark disability).
State Quotas
Quotas & Domicile Eligibility
(4 Questions)How is the Home State (HS) quota determined for NITs?
Home State quota is strictly determined by the LOCATION of the school/college where you appeared and passed your Class 12th (or equivalent) examination — NOT by your place of birth, permanent domicile address, or parents' residence.
Does my birth place or permanent residence state count for Home State quota?
No. Your birth place, native state, or permanent address state has zero bearing on Home State quota determination. Only the physical location of your Class 12 passing examination board center/school matters.
How is Home State determined for NIOS / Open School / Foreign students?
For Open School / NIOS candidates, the Home State is determined by the location of the study center / exam center where the candidate appeared for Class 12. Candidates passing Class 12 from outside India do not get Home State quota and compete under Other State (OS) / All India quota.
What is the difference between All India (AI) and Other State (OS) quotas?
All India (AI) quota applies to 100% of seats in IITs and IIITs, open to candidates across India. Other State (OS) quota applies to ~50% of seats in NITs for candidates passing Class 12 outside the NIT's home state.
Fees & Verification
Fees, Documents & Verification
(5 Questions)What is the Seat Acceptance Fee (SAF) amount for JoSAA 2026?
The Seat Acceptance Fee (SAF) is ₹30,000 for GEN, OBC-NCL, and GEN-EWS candidates, and ₹15,000 for SC, ST, and PwD candidates. SAF must be paid online upon receiving seat allotment in any round to confirm the seat.
What is the Partial Admission Fee (PAF) and when is it paid?
Partial Admission Fee (PAF) is an additional fee required for candidates accepting seats in the NIT+ system (NITs, IIITs, GFTIs) at the end of the final JoSAA round. Non-payment of PAF results in cancellation of the allotted seat.
Which documents are mandatory for online document verification?
Mandatory documents: 1. Class 10 Mark Sheet (DOB proof), 2. Class 12 Mark Sheet, 3. JEE Main/Adv Rank Card & Admit Card, 4. Category Certificate (issued on/after April 1, 2026 for OBC-NCL/EWS), 5. Medical Fitness Certificate (prescribed JoSAA format), 6. Govt Photo ID Proof.
Is physical reporting to the allotted institute mandatory after JoSAA?
Yes. After completing online seat acceptance and paying SAF & PAF, candidates must report physically to their allotted institute as per the published schedule for original document verification and final admission completion.
Is the Seat Acceptance Fee refundable if I withdraw from JoSAA?
Yes, if you formally withdraw from the JoSAA counselling process online before the final withdrawal round deadline, the Seat Acceptance Fee is refunded after deducting processing charges (typically ₹2,000).
CSAB Special
CSAB Special Rounds & Vacancies
(4 Questions)What are CSAB Special Rounds and when do they take place?
CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) Special Rounds are conducted AFTER all JoSAA rounds conclude to fill vacant seats remaining in the NIT+ system (31 NITs, 26 IIITs, 58 GFTIs). Usually, two CSAB special rounds are conducted.
Can I participate in CSAB if I did not register for JoSAA or got no seat?
Yes! CSAB Special Rounds are fresh registration rounds. Candidates who did not register for JoSAA, candidates who were not allotted any seat, candidates who exited JoSAA, or candidates holding a JoSAA seat can all participate in CSAB.
If I get a seat in CSAB Special Round, what happens to my JoSAA seat?
CSAB is an independent allocation. If you are allotted a NEW seat in a CSAB Special Round, your previously held JoSAA seat is automatically cancelled and offered to another candidate in order of merit.
Are IIT seats available in CSAB Special Rounds?
No. CSAB Special Rounds fill vacant seats ONLY in the NIT+ system (NITs, IIITs, GFTIs). IIT seats are NOT included in CSAB Special Rounds.
