Category Guide
JEE Main Seat Categories Explained
JoSAA 2026 counselling allocates seats under five main categories. Your JEE Main rank is compared against the category-specific closing rank of each programme.
OPEN (General)
All candidates irrespective of caste or community.
Most competitive category. IIT top branches close around rank 500–3,000; NIT top branches around 5,000–20,000.
OBC-NCL
Other Backward Classes (Non-Creamy Layer). Certificate from competent authority required.
Closing ranks are typically 1.5–2× higher than OPEN category for equivalent branches.
EWS
Economically Weaker Sections. Annual family income ≤ ₹8 lakh. EWS certificate required.
Introduced from 2019. Closing ranks usually fall between OPEN and OBC-NCL cutoffs.
SC
Scheduled Castes. State-issued SC caste certificate (not OBC/ST) required.
SC closing ranks are significantly relaxed — many CSE seats at top NITs close beyond rank 50,000.
ST
Scheduled Tribes. State-issued ST tribe certificate required.
ST seats have the highest closing ranks overall. Even top branches often close above rank 1,00,000.
Understanding Quotas: AI, HS & OS
Open to candidates from any state. Used by all IITs and IIITs. Also present at NITs for ~50% of seats.
Institutes: IITs, IIITs, GFTIs, NITs
Reserved for candidates whose home state matches the state of the NIT. Typically ~50% of NIT seats.
Institutes: NITs, some GFTIs
For candidates whose home state is different from the state of the NIT. ~50% of NIT seats.
Institutes: NITs, some GFTIs
Gender-Neutral seats are available across all categories. Female-only (Supernumerary) seats are additional and open only to female candidates.
Counselling Process
JoSAA 2026 Counselling — Step by Step
JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) manages the admission process for IITs, NITs, IIITs and GFTIs. Here's how the 2026 counselling process works.
Registration & Choice Filling
Week 1–2Candidates register on the JoSAA 2026 portal using their JEE Main / JEE Advanced roll number. Fill and lock college-branch preferences in order of priority.
Mock Seat Allotment
Pre-Round 1JoSAA releases a mock allotment based on current choices. Use this to refine your preference order before the first official round.
Rounds 1–6 Seat Allotment
Rounds 1–6Seats are allotted over 6 rounds based on rank, category, quota and preference order. You can float (upgrade), freeze, or exit after each round.
Document Verification
Each RoundVerify documents online or at the Reporting Centre. Required documents: JEE scorecard, Class 10 & 12 marksheets, category certificate, photo ID, and seat acceptance fee.
Seat Acceptance & Fee Payment
Each RoundPay the seat acceptance fee (₹35,000 for GEN/OBC/EWS; ₹15,000 for SC/ST/PwD) to confirm your allotted seat. Non-payment forfeits the seat.
Final Reporting to Institute
Post Round 6After the final round, report to your allotted institute with original documents for physical verification and admission confirmation.
Pro Tips for JoSAA 2026
- Fill 25–40 choices. More preferences = more options in later rounds.
- Use "Float" to automatically upgrade your seat if a better option becomes available.
- Keep category certificate (OBC-NCL/EWS/SC/ST) ready — must be in the correct format.
- Seat acceptance fee is partially refundable depending on the round you exit.
- Dates are typically announced in June. Check the official JoSAA website for exact dates.
Always verify schedules on the official JoSAA website: josaa.admissions.nic.in
Methodology
About the data
Every year, the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) publishes official opening and closing ranks for each institute, branch, category, gender, and quota across multiple counselling rounds. This predictor aggregates the final closing ranks from JoSAA 2025 and JoSAA 2024 to build a two-year historical baseline.
To estimate 2026 cutoffs, we compare your rank against these baselines with a ±5% buffer. Seats where your rank comfortably clears the closing rank are marked High chance; seats within the buffer are marked Close to cutoff.
Results are sorted: high-chance seats first, home-state seats surfaced prominently, then by closing rank. The raw data is bundled directly with the page — no API calls, no tracking.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Everything about this predictor and JoSAA counselling.
How accurate is the JEE Main 2026 college predictor?
The predictor uses official JoSAA 2025 and 2024 closing rank data and applies a ±5% margin to classify seats as "high-chance" or "close to cutoff". Actual 2026 cutoffs may vary with changes in seat count or applicant pool, but historical trends are the best available guide before counselling begins.
What is the difference between Opening Rank and Closing Rank?
Opening Rank is the rank of the first candidate allotted a seat in a round; Closing Rank is the last. The predictor compares your rank against the closing rank — if your rank is ≤ closing rank you stand a good chance of getting that seat.
What is HS quota and OS quota in NITs?
HS (Home State) quota reserves roughly 50% of NIT seats for candidates domiciled in the state where that NIT is located. OS (Other State) quota is for candidates from any other state. IITs and IIITs typically use only the AI (All India) quota.
Should I enter Session 1 or Session 2 rank?
Enter your CRL rank from whichever JEE Main session gave you the better score. JoSAA uses the best of your two session percentile scores to compute the final CRL rank used in counselling.
My rank is high (e.g. 50,000+). Can I still get an NIT seat?
Yes! Many NIT branches — especially newer NITs or less-popular branches — have closing ranks well above 50,000. Try filtering by your home state to expose HS quota seats, which tend to have higher closing ranks than OS seats.
Is this tool affiliated with JoSAA or NTA?
No. This is an independent tool built by ExamMint using publicly available JoSAA data. It is not affiliated with JoSAA, NTA, Ministry of Education, or any government body.
Does the predictor share my data with anyone?
No. All filtering and prediction logic runs entirely in your browser (client-side JavaScript). Your rank, category, gender, and state are never sent to any server or third party.
Which JoSAA rounds does the data come from?
The dataset uses the final closing ranks across all JoSAA 2025 and JoSAA 2024 rounds, giving the most comprehensive cutoff picture available.
